(Idea conceived around the year 1995, based upon newspaper reports of the event due)

In the year 2114 a comet is going to hit the earth with such intensity that the events of the period that had wiped out the dinosaurs from the earth could get repeated. Piles of dust could have remained in the atmosphere for years; cutting off all sunlight and depriving life to vegetation.

Here is a description of how earth would prepare itself to face the havoc, and the results expected of the havoc.

ATTEMPTS TO DIVERT THE COMET FROM ITS PATH OF THE EARTH
Multiple rockets powered with nuclear energy and payload of explosives would be fired from the earth, targeted to hit the comet at those points where the impact would cause it to waver from its path; this done while the comet is still at a distance enough to miss the earth as its target.

In the next 40 years a search would be made in the universe for heavy comets or asteroids , which in the further next 20 years would be impacted with multiple rockets in such a way as to divert their path and to make them cross the path of the rogue comet coming to earth; this impact made at a point enough to deflect the latter from its path, away from the earth. This effort would be needed since it would be impossible from the earth itself to hurl such a heavy piece of rock into space for this purpose. So, smaller comets or asteroids in the space would need to be roped in for this purpose.

It would be like playing billiards, or perhaps snooker, in the sky; the difference here being that it could mean not only multiple balls but also multiple cues hitting a ball at the same time - more than one rocket from the earth hitting an asteroid to guide it for crossing the path of the rogue comet.

What is important is not the weight but the momentum of the projectile that hits the oncoming comet. So, even if the hitting object has not an enormous weight, but has an enormous speed, it would have the effect necessary.

- Huge slabs of Marble and Granite
- Loose pieces of Rock
- Electrical Transformers
- Trains and Metro-Trains
- Bridges and Water Tanks
- Huge waves of sea-water
- Sea-Whales swimming on the water
- Ships and Barges
- Power Stations; Refineries
- Tall and heavy trees
- Desert sand

EFFORTS TO CONTAIN THE DAMAGE
- Heavy Chains of titanium to keep the items pegged to the ground
- To create habitable pockets under the ground (equipped with food, oxygen, and power)
- To move power stations underground
- To fasten all computers and monitors to the work-table which too should be held-down.
- To leave no free space above any object unless it is having its feet held in the ground. Otherwise, it is bound to jump up.
